INSPIRATION - ZACH

Zach and I met maybe 3 or 4 years ago. He had dyed black hair (with a bleached section, of course) and was working at the Buffalo Exchange on Haight. I was selling clothes. We became myspace friends. I don't think we re-met in person until a year later, when we crossed paths at a gay bar appropriately titled "The Gangway". We planned a date to go to the MOMA, and from then on we haven't left each other's sides.

We shared a shitty apartment for six months, but parted ways. We're planning on moving to New York together in 2009. Zach is a huge inspiration to me - he is at the same time effortless and classic in his personal styling, but also daring and avant garde. He's also a fashion designer. Did I mention that he's totally darling in more than two ways?

BAD LIGHTING

Yesterday's ensemble:

I had such a full day that I didn't get the chance to take the daily picture until it was dark out. My home does not have strong lighting, but our kitchen is cantalope-orange, so it reflects light brilliantly. One problem - the photos came out cantalope orange as well! I tried my hardest to balance the reds, blues, yellows and magentas, but even with an hour of tweaking, the colors are still off.

The colors worked in the aubergine room. odd.

Dress - modified vintage
Hat - Y's by Yohji Yamamoto
Shoes - Jeffrey Campbell

This is what you see in the background. My treasured vintage rock posters.

It's this guy's fault that I'm beat. It was his 25th birthday party last night!

We had fun, obviously

WHO WILL MY BOYFRIEND BE?

As it is the time of the year for mens fashion weeks, and since I am very single, I've decided to use style.com as a dating service. Let me tell you, the boys were all CRAZY about me, but I've whittled it down to these 8.

So my question to you: Who will my new boyfriend be? Vote!

NO WAVE + FASHION?

One day last week, I was checking Refinery29 (one of my dailies) and I was shocked to see a feature on "No Wave's Anti-Style". No wave is a genre that doesn't get a whole lot of attention, especially in the fashion category. Music-wise, 8-eyed-spy (an early band of Lydia Lunch's that only has two full length albums - and one of them is all live) is one of my top favorite bands, and so is Suicide. "Stained Sheets" by James Chance and the Contortions is probably one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. Combining these aural pleasures with fashion seemed a challenge worthy of taking. The article's writer states, "we stopped thinking about the musical influence of the movement and started wondering about the sartorial legacy of No Wave."

Ok.Why Not.

Finding photos of No Wave bands is a little bit like a scavenger hunt in composting bin, but I did my best and here goes something:

JAMES CHANCE
NO WAVE GANG
JAMES CHANCE
DNA (ARTO LINDSAY!!!)
SUICIDE
LYDIA LUNCH (WITH NICK CAVE & JAMES CHANCE - THOSE BOOTS!)

PS - Check out these SF bands:
MI AMI (http://www.myspace.com/miamiamiami)
BRONZE (myspace.com/copperclub)
The put on heartattack-inducing shows, but aren't tough on the eyes.

PPS - I uploaded some of my no wave faves:
8 eyed spy - Run Through The Jungle
Suicide - Ghost Rider
James Chance & The Contortions - Stained Sheets

RUFFLE FETISHISM

Now and then, I write lists of shops for San Francisco visitors. Besides my own store, MAC, and Metier, I ALWAYS include Wasteland. Although they always have a promising selection of vintage, over the last year or so they have increased their emphasis on designer clothing. I've encountered Comme Des Garcons, Martin Margiela, Herve Leger, Raf Simons, Yohji Yamamoto...the works!

As with any second hand store, some days you have the luck and others are plain unfruitful. Yesterday, the thrift gods were shining down on me, and I left with the Alexandre Herchovitch black skirt shown below. Perfect. I also bought a chain-mail tank top, but that will be saved for later.

SKIRT! SKIRT! SKIRT!

with suspenders maybe? or a blazer?

And as I was writing, these gems appeared at the front door. My first ebay purchase in years...can you guess the brand? No, not opening ceremony. Jeffrey Campbell. $35.

Since my trusted Bottega oxfords are being held hostage in shoe repair (its been over two weeks...could this actually be death row for them??), I've been sentenced to wearing heels daily, which has resulted great legs, but painful steps. I don't want bunions and foot surgery by the time I'm 30. These will be a gentile alternative and an excuse not to get gladiator sandals.

YOU SOULDN'T HAVE!

RESORT

After morning's of style.com synopsises, it's become clear that a few designers created collections just for me:

GIAMBATTISTA VALI

PHI

YIGAL AZROUEL / PROENZA SCHOULER

It's much more likely that you'd catch me lounging poolside wearing lace pants and matrix sunglasses than a cutout monokini with a nautical coverup. And any cocktail dress that appears to have a red growth eating the shoulder is an A+ in my gradesheet. Gothic summertime, 2008!
