THE EVOLUTION OF INSPIRATION

Lessons on intrigue from a girl in the crowd
So as I was cutting out leather to make harnesses, I decided that it might be nice to have a movie playing in the background. Stumped for ideas, I searched for 'Casino' on hulu, as I love mafia movies and it happens to be one of my favorites. Well Casino wasn't on there, but I instead found a the full version of 'Casino Royale'. I'm not much of a Bond-girl, but I figured it might be a good time to get myself acquainted with a classic.

Around three-quarters through the movie, after being hit over the head by adorable mod-type babes in dresses that accidentally fall off or hemlines that question what exactly constitutes being a "dress", my eyes suddenly stopped at woman below:

Although only onscreen for a few seconds, I went back a few times to try to soak up what exactly I had just seen. Hmm, a hooded top? Stacked bangles and costume rings? A buckle that looks mysteriously like an oversized pyramid-stud? Something very right is going on here. It dawned on me that her appeal was not only due to her unusual presence, but also because I was instantly reminded of 3 of my favorite fashion shows:

(Givenchy Couture FW09 / Haider Ackermann FW08 / Rick Owens SS09)
Next, add in some eternal inspiration from madame Michele Lamy and her bangled arms, the Louise Nevelson-esque jewelry from the Givenchy couture show, and of course a pinch of encens imagery, and you've got a way of life - a solid aesthetic.

& how does this all apply to my closet? Simple. First step; the cut-out dress that I sewed in Berlin. Add on a Juun.J hood-piece that was gifted to me by my dear Maxi, throw on every bracelet and bangle that I own, and finish the look with heavy eye makeup and my LD Tuttle sandals that echo the feeling of stacked bracelets. While it may still be too hot to wear the hood-piece outdoors, come-autumn this will become a go to look for every day.

what a odd way to find inspiration! old movies always have hidden jems. Loving the hood, reminds me of this boy who wore a hood in fifth grade every single day.

Awesome! I love to see how your brain peices all of these things together..So cool. Its amazing how something so minimal in an old movie can inspire such creative juices, right? I love the last picture.

You look very Femme Fatale in the last picture - like you're about to pull daggers from your hood and kill someone lol.
Funny how it's an old movie but her look really works for now.

i wasn't a a major fan of the shows that inspired this look...but the way you interpreted it into your own wardrobe actually turned out pretty great.

Yes! I love this! Wish I had the courage to do it! When I first logged on, for a second I thought your hood was straightened hair. I was about to comment: nooooooooooo! I was relieved to realize it was only a hood. Phew!
