Reading With Zana 10: THIERRY MUGLER
So I haven't yet touched upon the fabulousness that is my new roommate Cameron. Not only is he an impeccable dresser, fantastic stylist, and hilarious conversationalist (among other traits), he also has a to-die-for book collection that I am JUST starting to dive into. The first of many books that I've discovered is this one on Thierry Mugler. I found the imagery and clothing especially relevant as I've been going through a mental debate on fashion extremism versus reductionist minimalism (artschool vocab, whatup!). Thinking about the try-hard, the over-dress, the costume or whatever - and my love-of and subtle incorporation of such into possible every day wear. We have this ritual of getting dressed each morning (and night, depending on your lifestyle), and I love the severity and drama of Mugler's casuality. For me, it is such a back-and-forth pull; the attraction towards fantastical silhouettes contrasted with the need for single-garment simplicity. I am fascinated by 'futuristic aesthetics', how dress for the years to come always seems to venture into the realm of what most consider to be costume (note to self: make a post about Louise Goldin). Take the images below however you feel fit - inspiration, termporary fantasy, entertainment, possible reality? I encourage you to CLICK ON THE IMAGES to view them larger.

Hey Zana,
Been following your blog for quite awhile now. I'm a big fan. Anyway, I was wondering if you were aware of the fact that Thierry was one of the creative directors of Beyonce's current I AM tour, and lots of the very outfits in these pages were used in the tour in one way or another (costumes, program, merch, jumbo-tron snippets). I got to see it all in Oakland this summer and I fell in love with each and every outfit! Thierry is a creative genius. He definitely inspires me, and so do you.
I can't believe he has this book! I'm beyond jealous right now!! I want to have it so much! Last year I took it from my school library and it was just like mine for a few months, I couldn't say goodbye to it. I even considered saying that I lost it...
It's rather rare to find and it's pretty expensive too, but I hope it'll still be mine someday!
Thank you for this post!
