THIS PLUS THAT, A TOTAL FANTASY

Trying to let my feet do the talking

Those who have watched my blog will know that I love transforming garments through the usage of excessive materials. Buttons, spikes, etc. Some might also know that I have a special affinity towards utilizing base-pieces that are considered DIY-untouchable, aka designer, aka shredding an Alexander Wang tank. This latest project is the product of long-term inspiration as well as the lucky chance of inheriting a pair of never been worn Marc Jacobs shoes from the FW07 collection. In their original form, I adored the heel and style of the shoe. However they were...purple, and also had a circular plastic zipper pull which appeared far too mod for my taste. I immediately took my leather paint to the shoes, and they ended up turning a dark metallic bronze instead of black.

I knew that I wanted to embellish she shoe in one form or another, but didn't want to use spikes or studs. I then remembered an Alexander McQueen shoe from SS09 that had been posted on Ladivasosa which stuck in my mind ever since. Black gems! Why not?

The Marc Jacobs shoes after I attempted to paint them black. I adore the shape of the heel, how it becomes rounded at the bottom.

I used two main sized of gems (center and right bowl) as well as a few larger and triangular pieces for variation in texture.

After I used up the entire tube, the result looked like... well, they're a lot more sparkly in person but the flash photo representation isn't half bad!

jesus, where do you get all the money for this?

zana bayne said...

Das Hammer - The shoes were free, and I bought my materials in bulk - the final price was just a little bit over $60. Oh, and I work a lot? Thanks!

Very well-executed! They look fab and might I say very neat - if I were to attempt this the glue would be all over the place!

you made a marc jacobs piece better? you're a genius.

Wow, those look really great. Question for you, though. When you dye shoes, do you use actual leather dye, or shoe polish? Do you have a particular dye or polish you recommend? I'm asking because I have shoes that I'd like to change the color of, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Thanks for your advice!

Fabulous! Great DIY! I have had bad luck with that glue, It will be interesting to see if the embellishments stay on. Will you let us know?

You may take bold risks, but you always get brilliant results!

I am totally in love with this particular result, and will absolutely be attempting something similar. Thanks for the inspiration!

These boots are the shit!! That glue makes me die a little...I wear masks when I use that stuff cause it makes me feel all woozy.

lucinda said...

So good! The best part is, it will be easy to repair them if any of the gems come unstuck.

Are the gems plastic or glass/crystal?

I think the original Alexander Mcqueen inspiration for the shoe is kind of gaudy, but your execution is amazing! I think the bigger gems might have to be the best part!

apologies for the snarkiness. Being a bit too am (aber sexy?) here in berlin is getting to me. As an apology, I offer you this piece of inspiration http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/2009/07/27/punks-in-space/
I think the widow's peak will be the next big thing. That, or colored eyebrows. I think you could honestly rock turquoise bluish eyebrows. Go get yourself some blue eyeliner from beauty35 and think about it. peace.

BLOWN AWAY.
please do answer the question about the leather paint- i have a pair of cream-colored shoes i never wear because, much like yourself, black is pretty much as far as it goes in my wardrobe (though grey is right up there, too).
you are quite an inspiration. right now i'm starting to make chain-jewelry much like your harnesses- what i wouldn't give to just have one of your creations. i'd love to start working with leather and chains. yummmm.

This is amazing, I love it!! I have seen so many shoe DIYs and some of them are such rubbish - this actually looks expensive and does the original shoe justice. Well done! x

Holy...those are amazing! It's like sacrilege to say this, but they are a huge improvement on the original. Eff yeah.
