DO IT DIY IT

Looking From Head-to-Toe, Would You Know?

Most of the time when I come up with ideas to make clothing, I sit with the idea, sketch out options, and conceptualize all of the pattern pieces in my mind until I know EXACTLY how I'm going to attack it. I guess I have a geometric sort of mind, where I like to visualize sleeves and bodices coming together almost like a puzzle. I was never formally trained on how to make clothes, and all of my patterns are in San Francisco, so attempting something like, oh lets say, a jacket - is rather daunting. Nonetheless, last night it was time.

The inspiration was a cross between Rad Hourani, Rick Owens, and Helmut Lang. The material was leftover sweatshirt jersey (for the body of the jacket) that I brought from San Francisco, and a pair of shiny leggings that never fit right and I never wore to act as the sleeves. The point was to make an extra comfortable jacket that had different looks when it was open and closed. I'm usually a minimalist when it comes to mixing fabrics (one fabric the whole way through, please!!) but I've been longing extra tightly fitted shiny sleeves, so thats where the leggings fabric came into play.

I made this sequined pentagram dress a little bit over one year ago.

Pockets are very important to me.

Maybe it could use a heavy metal wing shoulderpiece?

& since everybody's been freaking about about the "invisible shoes", I thought it might be appropriate to don these customized stripper shoes that I made for the first issue of LURVE Margazine one year ago.

I love how you made this from leftover material + leggings. It reminds of the time I tried to make a pair of shorts from old kimono sleeves... I don't think I ever finished them!

Dude...the jacket...I can't believe you made that. IT's SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK. Everything about it is SICK. And it warms my lil' trial and error heart to know that you are self-taught. =D

I have projects swimming around in the brain that I should get started on. As soon as I get a new needle.

I've actually thought about making one myself, in a more mandy version ofcourse, but also with the bias zipper like rick owens / damir doma..
I think i have to do it now!

I am blown away by your talent! How were you able to craft that hood and put in the zipper without any formal training?

A quick note - I must give credit to my mom who introduced me to sewing. She told me the best way to learn was to practice with pre-made patterns, so that is what I did. I spent hours scouring ebay for clothing patterns from the 60's and 70's, and after years of following those I kind of got the hang of basic garment shapes
