MAKE IT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Stay in on Saturday night
Some of my absolute favorite people in Berlin came together last night to enjoy each others company, the most delicious bolognese pasta (sugar & spice is the secret, really), a diverse booze selection, and living-room dancing.

This is John-Patrick, another non-native Berliner. I highly reccomend reading his writings, which can be found HERE. I should probably also mention that he takes an awfully nice photograph, many of which (so far) can be found HERE. Dear Future; look out for John-Patrick Dine!

Also - BERLINERS! Come to THIS later today.

ROYGBIV

Talking about the weather & music

I feel like I've experienced all 4 seasons in the last 3 days. Blazing heat, thunder, lightning, sun, clouds, rain, tropical climate, wind, sweat, chills. Today I am freaking out on music... finally hunting and tracking down albums that I've been meaning to listen to for years. Today I am listening to Magazine on repeat. What are you listening to this week?

BERLIN PAJAMAS & 5-MINUTE DIY

(Tank - Clu / Pants - Zara / Boots - Veronique Branquinho)
One-eyed Sunday
Over the past month, I have time and time again noticed and appreciated the level of aesthetics here in Berlin. Another observation has been the number of girls around town wearing some variation of drop-crotch, pleated, high waist, somewhat loose trousers. I wouldn't hesitate to say that on the fashionable set, they outnumber the skinny jean. Hence, this is why I will now refer to the above pants that I am wearing today as "Berlin pajamas".

Black-on-black sequins-on-sequins
On a separate but equal note, as my sewing machine is still out of commission, I've been racking my brain to try to come up with projects that do not involve traditional sewing. I brought along a few trinkets and finishings along with me here, and have since been staring at them through their plastic bags, hoping that an idea would pop out at me. Suddenly, the combination of my sequined sweater, bag of safety pins, and bag of black sequined trim came together in the form of a draped, camouflaged textural addition.

INSPIRATION: ULRIK MARTIN LARSEN

Ulrik Martin Larsen
The week before I moved from San Francisco, I encountered a few random freak occurrences that left intense lasting impressions on me. One of these was attending an extremely thorough show of the works by the artist Nick Cave (NOT the musician) at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. I'll do a more indepth post about this at a late date, but to sum it up I was completely struck by the fluid combination of textile, performance, video, and photography around his breathtaking works.

Fast forward one-and-a-half months, and I am invited to the opening of a show featuring a friend of a friend named Ulrik. Little did I know that seeing his pieces would once again conjur the sorts of feelings I had while viewing the Nick Cave show. Ulrik's works are not only technical feats, but also maintain a balance between garment/sculpture/object which I find so fantastic and equally problematic AKA great. The pieces also have seperate lives when viewed up close and then with some distance - the distinction emerges between the form created and the materials used. ULRIKMARTINLARSEN.COM
