BEVEL JEWELRY BY JONATHAN GOLDSTEIN

The Ball Game

"The legend of the Hero Twins is recorded in the Quiché document called Popol Vuh. It constitutes the oldest Maya creation myth to have been preserved in its entirety. As the story goes, the father and uncle of the Hero Twins, Hun Nunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu, were ball players. The noise of their ball pounding on the ground angered the lords of underworld. Nunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu were summoned down to Xibalba, the land of the demons, where they were tricked and finally sacrificed by the Death Gods and their helpers."

This is the back story of Jonathan Goldstein's first collection as Bevel. I had only seen one of his rings prior to the launch, and now seeing all of the pieces together I am slightly overcome by their raw sensitivity and carnal antiquity. Each piece is reminiscent of a relic, crafted with the utmost care - yet discovered after years of decay. You can see the rest of his pieces HERE.

Each piece is offered in three if not four of the following states of finish, demonstrated by the four rings below:
Modern: mirror finished and smooth with an architectural futurism
Classic: modeled after the textures of weathered, aged Mayan temples
Sacrificed: dark and distressed with a highly textured blackened surface
Skeletal: only the bones remain
