READING WITH ZANA 14

Reading With Zana 14 - Sang Bleu 5
Where should I begin about issue 5 of Sang Bleu Magazine? For starters, I received it about a month ago (note - I'm astonished that time has passed so quickly!), and it has taken me this long to initially process it, not to mention that I will still be unpacking its contents for months to come. Under the guise of a "tattoo & fashion" magazine, Sang Bleu is able to dissect our notions of identity, beginning at the exterior surface and working its way (like ink) through our inner selves; exploring our need for fantasy, the normalcy of kink & fetish, why we decide to look the way we do (if it is indeed a decision), and our attraction to what is considered "dark".

Working your way through Sang Bleu is like navigating through a stream of consciousness - certain ideas and themes are obviously present, but most will become clear after re-examination. Interviews spill onto editorials, overlapping with portraits that share space with essays and prose, back to more interviews and then artwork...and it continues as such throughout the 308 pages of the double-volume issue. The organization is created through the content, and how you re-contextualize it throughout your reading. It's a hypnotic, seductive experience.
