FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN WORDS ABOUT A DESK

It is probably very evident to those who frequent my blog that I am a compulsive customizer. Whether it be a pair of expensive shoes, handbag, bedframe...you name it, I've fucked with it. I believe in the potential of objects as well as my ability to transform them into something that is perfect for me! I also have a small complex about uniformity - Ikea furniture sends a chill down my spine, the thought of thousands of people owning the exact same thing as I do gives me anxiety. My mother and I jokingly call ourselves "snobs" for this very reason, but I don't necessarily think its such an awful thing when you are able to deal with it in a creative, economic way.

Since moving to my new apartment at the beginning of this month, I've been struck quickly and swiftly with furniture and decorating fever. And its been no surprise to me that I happen to have very expensive taste in interior decorating. Unfortunately, I don't have an unlimited budget or the means to spend several hundred dollars on singular items so as with many aspects of my life, I've gotten cheap, scrappy, and most importantly; crafty.

In planning out my apartment, I've known that there are a few key furniture pieces that are more necessity than decoration, and one of which is a desk for my kitchen that can also function as a small table for dining. My requirements were for it to be very sturdy and made from wood, to be able to endure any of my future projects. After a few visits to local Williamsburg vintage furniture stores (way too pricey) and a few furniture outlets (way too plastic) I ended up at the mecca for anything & everything you never knew you needed: Green Village Junk Shop. I promise next time I go I will take my camera, because until you see it its kind of impossible to imagine its obscenity. Its literally shit piled on top of shit inside of shit with some chairs & tables on top of all of that! Rows and rows of this! I'm talking dishware, old shoes, neon signs, menorahs, speakers, everything. You have to be really patient and open minded when you go, but again today's gold-star word is POTENTIAL.

After sifting and searching for god-knows-how-long, I ended up with the egyptian cat, jewelry dresser, and studded chest ($15 each) from a few posts down, as well as the fancy chair (there's 2 of them, $50 total) and a perfectly sturdy wooden desk for $65. The desk originally had a dingy white tabletop, but I couldn't wait to take photos and spraypainted it black. Although severely more aesthetically pleasing, I still wasn't 100% happy with it - I don't like to settle for mediocre. Luckily for me, I had impulsively purchased 2000 upholstery tacks from ebay a few weeks ago ($11 per thousand) with the idea to customize furniture with and...well, that's where I am now. Studding a desk. I will be posting the final result, but I'm not sure how long that will take. All I can say is that my plan for the desk is inspired by Natalia Brilli.

Andrea - I gotta warn you, it truly is JUNKY! Be prepared for a gallon of dust and kinda nasty surfaces. You really have to dig! And I drenched all of my purchases in lysol once I got home.

This post reminded me of a conversation i had with my friend, Theresa, a couple weeks ago:
T-"You know, anyone can look good with enough hair, makeup, and styling. Just look at Sarah Jessica Parker!"
J-"hmmmm"
T-"There's no such thing as ugly people, only poor people"
J-"There's no such thing as poor people, only uncreative people"

N E waayzzz!

Spray it all! Spray it all!
I am in a love affair with spray paint. Almost every solid piece of furniture that I own is sprayed. Maybe its because half of it is from ikea.

Yes, it would seem so. A long time favorite of mine - I live just around the corner, and have been shopping at EG since they were selling C&C California shirts. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.
