OBESITY + SPEED X OAK X LEATHER

My massive hangover is keeping me from writing anything of substance, so let me just describe the event: Obesity & Speed had a party last night at OAK and all of the family wore my harnesses. Becka & Greg DJ'd, and we all (me) drank too much. Voila!

ZOLA JESUS LAST NIGHT IN BLACK & WHITE

Today the model for a shoot I was styling asked me what music I listened to. My answer was "generally rock stuff from late 70's and early 80's, but guilty pop music when I'm working". When I asked him what he listened to, I got a slew of completely unrecognizable band names that apparently I was crazy not to know of! And to his credit, I haven't exactly been diligent about keeping up with new music. With this said, there was one name that I had been hearing a lot of lately: Zola Jesus. When I was invited to see her show at the Bowery Ballroom, I really had no choice - backed by the testimonial from my friends at Change Of Season as well as a vote of confidence from CLOAK's Alexandre Plokhov, my expectations ran high, but were not in vain. Fantastic show.

& then the night took us to the RIOT.OF.PERFUME headquarters and into a haze of booze & Bauhaus, remembered only by a handful of polaroid photos (the rest can be seen HERE).

INSPIRATION: KATE OF BREAKING GLASS

In moments of studio procrastination, I've taken to navigating through the deep archives of netflix 'watch instantly' category. Upon first look, you find some great stuff...and then you run out. Except for that's not really the case, cause the real gems won't be revealed unless you really hunt for them. Somewhere in between watching old concert footage of Iggy Pop and Spinal Tap, I ran into Breaking Glass (1980).

Intrigued by the description, I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a go - what I wasn't expecting was a visually fantastic movie with an awesome original soundtrack to match! The leading lady "Kate" is played by Hazel O'Connor who not only sports white face makeup like a second skin, but also wrote all of the songs featured in the movie. Naturally, I adore the 'casual' extremity of Kate's look, from her shaved eyebrows & geometric hair contrasted with tailored suits. I don't want to give too much away, I highly recommend that you see it for yourself.
