FETISH

(Coat - Comme Des Garcons FW 2000 / PVC leggings - Les Chiffoniers / Shoes - Jil Sander FW07 / Bootstraps - Zana Bayne Leather)

Its no secret that I'm especially attracted to garments that incorporate or appropriate elements of fetish wear. I guess it comes with the territory of being a professional leather lady, no? I found this Comme Des Garcons coat at Tokio 7 sometime last year, and consider it the perfectly classic trench coat for my wardrobe. Even cooler is that its from the Fall 2000 collection which I have only been able to find the campaign images for (below) which alone are strikingly inspirational images. If anyone knows where I can see the full collection, I'd be very grateful.

HOME SWEET HOME

Last week I was in London; a trip which turned out completely different than I had planned it to be. I ended up collaborating with photographer Adrian Wilson on a video/photoshoot (more on this later) for Zana Bayne Leather x Sang Bleu magazine which was premiered at our renegade outsider fashion week party. I wish I could talk more about this but I single-handedly consumed the entire bar, and don't remember much from the night. But honestly, the whole trip was made amazing by the Sang Bleu family! (And a massive thank you to Leslie & Charlie who let me stay with them & solved all of my London problems).

I've got quite a lot of blog catching up to do, in the meantime here is what I wore today. For those not in New York, it's bright out but freezing! We were treated to an impromptu gust of snow flurries yesterday during the sunniest hour, so managing strategic layers is key.

CHARLIE MAY FW12

Beep beep, I'm in London! Its my 4th day here, and I finally took my first photos last night (I've been too busy boozing and schmoozing with friends to pick up my camera). I always love when my online blogging world and fashion industry world collide, and better even when its in an elegant way. Charlie May writes one of my favorite fashion blogs (A La Mode) but her main passion is her namesake clothing collection Charlie May. From following her blog, it is evident that her line is a direct extension of her personal taste. For her second season she focused on initially minimal silhouettes, that with further inspection had fantastic detailing; the point of a collar, navy leather accents, and my favorite - a sort of anti-bustier top & dress.

(My photo's aren't the greatest, and certainly do not capture the collection in the best way so check Charlie's blog later on for more accurate coverage)

Hey look, us bloggers really exist and can co-exist! It was a pleasure to finally meet Charlie, and a sweet surprise to bump into Ivania.

NORISOL FERRARI FW12

So proud of my girl Norisol Ferrari who showed her Fall/Winter 2012 collection at Lincoln Center yesterday. The great think about Norisol's work, is that she isn't focused on one specific theme - instead she designs for a variety of women, each strong individuals. This thought was expressed in her presentation, each mannequin seemingly a separate heroine, all within the same story. This is just the beginning.

THOM BROWNE FW12

"This is the story of ten beautiful girls who died for fashion, and twice a year for each season they come back to life through their dreams"

That was the gist of the introduction that was read aloud to us in a dimly candle-lit room within the New York Public Library, filled with 10 coffins containing masked models suited in Thom Browne. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" playing in the background. The show that followed truly felt as though we were transported into that dream. One by one the models entered, walking slowly as if time had come to a lull. The clothing itself was pure fantasy, each garment exaggerated in its own whimsical way; From pencil skirts with far too many buttons extending down to the model's ankles, to abstracted jackets that barely echoed their traditional forms - completely recreating the human figure. There was one dress adorned with mirrors in a harlequin pattern that left a trail of reflections on the floor. There was a bittersweet element of the show as well, because remember - these are the dreams of girls who have died. The score switched to the "Ice Dance" theme from Edward Scissorhands and I began to notice the nostalgic elements of the clothing - shawls in the shapes of animals, soft spikes protruding from the suits like cartoon'esque distortions. As much as Thom Browne is known for his usage of fetish, this collection also touched on childlike innocence - the final model resembling how I would picture an imaginary queen of dinosaurs.

I left the show feeling touched, with an emotional connection to the performance. And isn't that how we, as members of the fashion industry, should want to react to collections? It is easy to forget to dream in a business that favors formulaic runways and stale presentations - specifically in New York. All I can say, is thank goodness for Thom Browne.

ASHER LEVINE FW12

My friend Asher Levine's work always has the feeling of a post-apocalyptic half human half creature hybrid. For his fall/winter 2012 collection, the theme continued in what I would consider the most realistic way - army uniform remnants, functional materials (wool, leather, fur) and the presence of something slightly alien. It is certainly his most wearable collection to date without sacrificing the unexpected details and craftsmanship that he is known for.

Additionally, I collaborated with Asher to make three military inspired harnesses for his collection.
